Major Program Requirements

Biology is the scientific study of living things at levels ranging from the molecular to the global. Three degree programs - Biology, Environmental Science, and Biology Education - tailor the biology student’s curriculum to specific scientific and career interests. The Biology program rigorously involves students in crucial areas of biological thinking and laboratory work, while preparing them for careers in research, medicine and other health care professions, and industry. This program is designed to meet both graduate and medical school requirements. Majors in Environmental Science apply biological principles to environmental problems, while planning for ecological careers such as research or conservation. Biology Education programs - for prospective students in Inclusive Education (1-9) and Adolescence Education (7-12) provide a solid base in modern science for students interested in teaching science.

B.S. in Biology

Required:
Introductory Biology (8 credits), Plant Biology, animal elective, Genetics, Ecology, Cell Elective, Senior Seminar,
Chemistry: Inorganic (8 credits), Organic (8 credits) ++
Mathematics: Calculus I +
Physics: (8 credits) ++

Recommended:
Microbiology, Immunology, Senior Research, Calculus IIScience

B.S. in Environmental Science

Required:
Introductory Biology (8 credits), Plant Biology, Microbiology, Conservation Biology, Ecology, Upper Division Biology and related electives (15 credits), Chemistry (4 semesters), Mathematics (elementary calculus and statistics), Economics, Political Science, a physical science, Survey of Computer Applications, and Field Study (research or internship).

For Biology and Environmental Science majors, the Senior Seminar (Bio 450-451) and (Env 450-451) functions as the Senior Experience. It develops the scientific reasoning and communication skills and evokes the integration of the students’ major experience with other modes of inquiry. Students prepare and present a major research paper based on original laboratory research or extensive reading of research literature. Biology majors in education programs participate in Bio 451 only.
