Career Services Office

The Office of Career Services offers assistance to all students and alumni making career decisions and conducting job, graduate school, and internship search campaigns. Workshops are offered regularly regarding graduate school selection, interviewing skills, résumé writing and job search techniques.

Individual counseling and consultation services regarding employment, graduate study and career decision-making are available by appointment. Regularly scheduled résumé critique times are also planned to help students who need a quick overview of different drafts of their résumé.

The Career Resource area houses a variety of printed materials on careers in different fields as well as general career planning aids and resource books. A computerized career decision-making program called CHOICES is also available as are graduate school directories and test applications. Practice administrations of the major Graduate School admissions tests are offered each semester. Up-to-date information about on- and off-campus, full-time, part-time and summer job openings is available for student and alumni review. The office is open two evenings until 7pm each week that school is in session.

Organizations seeking to employ graduating seniors visit the campus each year. The Career Services Office coordinates interview scheduling and résumé gathering for these organizations. Career Services also coor-dinates a résumé referral program and large recruiting fairs such as Teacher Recruitment Day and the Rochester Area Career Expo. Consult the Career Services Office for more details. Job postings, a workshop schedule, information on job fairs, and much more can be viewed on the Career Services home page: www.naz.edu/dept/career_services.

Seniors, graduate students, alumni and students meeting state teacher certification requirements through Nazareth may establish a file of recommendations and other pertinent data for use by prospective employers or graduate schools.

Academic Advisement

Through the academic advisement program, students are given assistance in planning an educational program that is in accord with the college’s academic policies and degree requirements as well as with the student’s choice of major, academic ability, special interests and career options.

Incoming undeclared freshmen are assigned to a freshman/sophomore faculty advisor by the Coordinator of Freshman Academic Support Services until the end of the sophomore year or until they have been accepted into a major program. Incoming freshmen in an intended major program are assigned to a department faculty advisor by the department chairperson.

Incoming undeclared transfer students are assigned an advisor by the Academic Advisement Center. Incoming declared transfer students are assigned to a depart-mental faculty advisor by the chairperson of the major department.

Students are expected to decide on a major by the end of their sophomore year. There-after, academic advising is the responsibility of the student’s major department. In addition to faculty advisors, the Academic Advisement Center in Smyth Hall offers all students assistance and special help with academic matters. A peer tutoring program is coordinated through this office for students requesting assistance with individual courses.

The Coordinator of Freshman Academic Support Services works closely with freshmen and their advisors and with other faculty to facilitate their adjustment to college academic life.

Special counseling is provided for HEOP and Excel students in the academic, personal, social and career development areas. Tutors are available throughout the academic year at the request of the student and/or advisor. Entering HEOP and Excel students attend a special five-week summer orientation program designed to measure, assess and strengthen basic academic skills needed to succeed in college.
