Major Program Requirements

Includes an introduction to all phases of Theatre Arts, academic as well as studio. Electives allow limited specialization. Project courses in the senior year are designed for concentrated work in special areas under faculty supervision.

The Senior Experience for Theatre majors consists of a required seminar (Tha 452-Seminar in Theatre with Internship). In this course, the students reflect on their major experience, and they are given opportunities to integrate material from theatre and other core areas of the college experience. A final project is required in some phase of production, design, or theory.

A total of 41 credits and production participations are required to complete the B.A. degree in Theatre Arts. The requirements are:

  • Tha 120, 140, 150, 275, 276, 351, 375 and 452;
  • Tha 240 or 250;
  • Tha 330, 331 or 332;
  • One 200-level Tha course;
  • One 300 or 400 level Tha course;
  • Two movement courses: Dance (Jazz, Ballet, Tap or Ballroom), Yoga, Fencing, Juggling (0 credit) +

Participation in college theatrical productions and departmental workcalls is required. A total of seven (7) production Labs are required in at least four (4) different areas with at least one “preparation” (P) and one “run crew” (R) experience in any of the following areas:

  • Acting; Assistant Stage Management;
  • Costumes (R, P); Scenery (R,P); Lights (R,P); Sound (R,P); Properties (R,P); Makeup (R,P); Special Projects* (R,P)

The seven required Labs will be awarded credit as follows:

  1. Two Labs (0 credit) in two different areas are included within Tha 120 and Tha 150.
  2. Five Labs (1 credit) in two additional areas.
  3. A student may not repeat a single area for a fifth experience until completing the seven Labs required in four different areas.
  4. Advanced students may petition for Tha 345 Theatre Practicum credit for leadership positions after meeting the Lab requirement if they so choose.

Department Minor

A minor in Theatre Arts is available to accompany other majors. A total of 20 credits beyond the basic 3-credit course are required. Requirements are Tha 120 (prerequisite with 0-credit Lab); 140; 150 (with 0-credit Lab); 275 or 276, 351; two 300-400 level Tha electives; one movement course (0-credit) +; and two (2) Production Labs (1 credit each) in two different areas with one “preparation” (P) and one “run crew” experience.
