SOC 361 - Mass Media and Popular Culture


This course examines the role of the mass media in American society and its impact on American culture from a sociological perspective. Some of the questions to be addressed in class include: What do our cultural preferences say about who we are, both as individuals and a society? How are culture, social class, and power linked? How did _fake news_ get to be a problem and what can we do about it? Why do racial and gender stereotypes in television matter? What can we learn about ourselves and society by analyzing popular books, movies, television shows, and social media memes? Course Codes: BR. Prerequisite: any social science PEQ or permission of instructor.
