Environmental Studies - Minor

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: College of Arts and Sciences

The Environmental Studies Minor is an interdisciplinary minor, consisting of six courses, for students who are interested in the natural environment and in exploring environmental issues from different types of academic disciplines (e.g. social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, management). In addition, it may be attractive to students who have environmental interests beyond (or in addition to) the natural sciences approach, who may not desire an extensive natural science curriculum in exploring environmental issues, or who do not have a strong background in natural sciences. The minor is distinct from the Environmental Science Minor which provides a strong natural science focus.

Designed to be combined with any major, this minor may be beneficial to those interested in such things as, for example, environmental advocacy, environmental law, environmental justice through non-profits, or public policy; teachers who include units on the environment or awareness of environmental issues in their classrooms; those interested in green business and/or sustainability of business practices; those working internationally (e.g. in western Europe where environmental awareness is generally higher than in the U. S., or Asia where environmental issues are especially serious in some areas). The minor may also be helpful to students pursuing non-environmental careers but who desire to make environmentally sensitive personal choices in their lives, or who are concerned about, or interested in, environmental issues.

The Environmental Studies Minor consists of two required courses and four electives, selected from an interdisciplinary list of courses, for a total of six courses. These six courses must be from at least three different academic disciplines (i.e. at least three different discipline prefixes).

Elective Courses

In addition to the two required courses, students select four courses from the electives listed below.  At least one of these courses must be outside sociology (SOC) and biology (BIO).
