Mathematics - Major

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: College of Arts and Sciences

The mathematics major is designed for students who want a solid mathematical background for a broad range of career options and graduate work. Many math majors have minors or double majors. This program consists of 40 credits of mathematics, including Real Analysis and Abstract Algebra. Students also take one semester of physics (calculus-based) and one semester of mathematical programming.

Students are officially accepted into the mathematics major after completion of MTH 220, Introduction to Mathematical Structures, with a grade of C or better. All mathematics majors must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0, both in the major and overall.

Mathematics Core

The Mathematics core provides the foundation for all of our programs. Students take 6 courses (21 credits) listed below. The individual programs add mathematical depth and breadth. The Senior Comprehensive Problem Solving Seminar engages the student in integrating and applying a broad range of skills and concepts.

Required Courses for Mathematics Majors

In addition to the Mathematics core, students in the Mathematics major are required to take the 21 credits listed below.

Mathematics Senior Experience

The comprehensive experience evaluates student mastery in mathematical thinking.  Students are actively involved in investigating collections of non-routine problems from a variety of sources. Students will be required to demonstrate their understanding and application of fundamental concepts, processes, representations and communication of mathematics.
