The Advanced Certificate in Critical Urban & Community Education (AC-CUE) develops specialized understanding of the conditions of educational endeavors in urban environments. This program provides:

  • Knowledge of social, economic and political condition affecting urban education
  • Exemplary instructional strategies to work with students across a variety of levels, content areas, and institutional formats
  • Experiences that can serve as guides for working with youth and families from broadly diverse backgrounds

The certificate program is grounded in the study of four interconnected contexts affecting urban environments and schools: culture, community, classroom and policy. It blends critical theory, cultural studies and leadership skills for renewal of educational endeavors in urban settings.

This interdisciplinary program offered by the department of Social and Psychological Foundations of Education (SPFE) is designed to meet the professional development needs of community educators, youth leaders, policy makers and teachers. The certificate program is also appropriate for graduate students in other programs looking to add these specialty skills to their certification process.

Courses in the AC-CUE program may be taken as stand-alone by anyone interested in urban education, or as electives by those enrolled at any institution.
