Business and Marketing - Initial Certification

  • Initial Certification

The purpose of this program is to provide students with extended subject matter competence, pedagogical skills, and learning experiences that will enhance their contribution and participation within the instructional work force. This program is driven by commitment to high standards and accountability offering students experiences that foster professionalism within the affective domain. This program will:

  • recognize the diversity and change in society;
  • integrate technological information/data and use this information as an instructional tool;
  • maintain partnerships with multiple stakeholders groups;
  • provide learning experiences that are holistic in structure;
  • structure learning experiences that offer a sense of integration with life experiences;
  • model the relationship-based nature of teaching;
  • provide a broad range of skills and knowledge including research skills, communication skills, and decision-making skills;
  • offer instruction that attends to content pedagogy, ethics and professionalism;
  • provide instruction that fosters communication skills;
  • enhance teaching skills that have been previously acquired;
  • provide a comprehensive instructional format that prepares students for NYS certification as professional Business and Marketing teachers and Work Study Coordinators.

INITAL CERTIFICATION PROGRAM 

Entry Requirements   

  1. Completion of a baccalaureate degree at an accredited institution with a cumulative index of 3.0 and a B average in the major field. An applicant who does not meet these grade point average expectations must address them in his/her personal statement; please see the Personal Statement section of the admissions application form for further information.
  2. Official transcripts.
  3. Two letters of recommendation.
  4. Application and fee.
  5. Completion of the personal-professional statement as described on the application form.
  6. Letter(s) of verification from employer(s) verifying 600 hours of work experience.
  7. Resume.

Program leads to: Initial certification in Business and Marketing and Coordinator of Work-Based Learning

Prerequisite Admission Requirements for Initial Certification, Business and Marketing Program:  

The following are prerequisites for initial certification in Business and Marketing as determined by the New York State Education Department. A complete transcript review of previous studies will be conducted to ascertain that each applicant meets the prerequisite admission requirements. Application materials will be reviewed by the Graduate Business and Marketing Admissions Committee regardless of the number of credit hours of deficiencies. All liberal arts deficiencies must be successfully completed with a grade of C or higher and a total cumulative grade point average of 2.7. Official transcript(s) must be on file in the Office of Graduate Student Services. For further information, please refer to Admission Status Types on the application form.

For New York State Certification through Nazareth College in Business and Marketing  

A total of 60 credit semester hours in the Liberal Arts and Sciences, including but not limited to:

  • Artistic expression; communication; information retrieval; concepts in history and social sciences; humanities; scientific and mathematical processes; and written analysis and expression
  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting, business marketing or management from an accredited institution. A minimum of 30 credits in the areas of business; at least 12 hours must be upper level courses. The Program Director will evaluate each transcript to ensure the students have a combination of all areas of business.
  • Language other than English: Minimum 3 semester credit hours . 
  • Evidence of basic knowledge/skills in information technology.
  • 600 hours of work certified by a letter from the employer(s) for the extension, Coordinator of Work-Based Learning.  

Teacher candidates use the NYS TEACH system to apply for Professional certifications and need to pay the fees in effect at the time they apply. New York requires all teacher candidates to have fingerprint/background check on file with TEACH, pass all appropriate New York State Teacher Certification Examinations <www.nystce.nesinc.com> and have the appropriate years of teaching experience. New York State Education Department maintains a website with certification requirements: http://www.highered.nysed.gov/tcert/
