Education: Initial Teacher Certification in Adolescence Education

Program Description:
This program is designed to prepare students to teach at the middle
and high school level in the content of their major. It will enable
students to be knowledgeable about the characteristics of pre and
adolescent learners and it will provide the essential skills and
methodologies to enable teachers to create student-focused and engaging
lessons that are standards-based. Students who successfully complete
this program will receive New York State Initial Teacher Certification
in the following area:
Adolescence Education (Grades 7-12)
(Note: Adolescence certification is specific to a content area.)
Academic Majors for this program: Biology,
Business and Marketing, Chemistry, English, History, Mathematics,
French, Italian, German, Spanish
- Students must have 36 hours in their
content area for certification
- Students must have two courses in the
same foreign language
Admission Requirements:
Qualified sophomores and juniors choosing to prepare for a teaching
career may be admitted to the School of Education when they are
recommended by the department chairperson of their academic major and
have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.7 and satisfy the
interview requirements of the major department and of the School of
Education. Please note: You must have an
academic major; you may not major in Education.

Below is a semester-by-semester breakdown of when the required courses for Adolescence Education should be taken. Fall - Senior Year
Professional Semester
Required Courses for Adolescence Education
The following courses are required for Adolescence Education for majors in Biology, Chemistry, English, History, Mathematics, French, Italian, German, and Spanish. In addition to these courses, each student takes a department course numbered DEPT 457, Curriculum Methodology: Middle School and Senior High in their area of certification (These courses have a total of 100 hours of fieldwork required). Additional Program Option: Teaching students with Disabilities at the Adolescence level
Additional Program Option: Teaching students with Disabilities at the Adolescence level (Grades 7 - 12) (Dual Certification) Students also have the option of completing required coursework and field experiences that would lead to another certification in Teaching Students with Disabilities at the Adolescence level. This dual certification option is designed to provide the knowledge base to support student learning in content areas at the adolescence level, as well as to specifically meet the needs of students with disabilities in secondary classrooms by means of differentiated instruction and collaborative teaching.
Students who elect to pursue this option must complete the following courses in addition to the required courses for Adolescence Education listed above:
