Music Therapy Major with Education Certification

This degree prepares students for a career in the music
therapy profession. Completion of the
degree and the subsequent six-month music therapy internship results in
eligibility to sit for the national certification examination in music
therapy. Successful completion of the
examination results in the Music Therapist-Board Certified (MT-BC) credential
awarded by the Certification Board for Music Therapists. Students find employment as therapists in
public and private institutional settings as well as in private practice. Students
may also matriculate to graduate programs.
Grades in all music therapy courses must be “C” or
above. The completion of one additional
psychology elective allows a psychology minor. A gerontology minor is
also
available. Students
with strong academic records may be interested in completing
requirements for
music education certification. One additional year of study is needed
for this dual program leading to state certification for teaching music
B-12 in the public school.
The Bachelor of Music in
Music Therapy with Education Certification Degree requires a minimum of 161.5 credits.

Music Core
All students in the Department of Music must take: - Minimum 9 credits in upper division Music Theory or History and Literature courses (300 or 400 level)
- Weekly, one hour private lessons (MUP 1_) - 8 Semesters
- Choir, Band, or Orchestra (ENS 08_) - 8 Semesters (7 semesters for Music Education students)
- MUS 019 - Concert Attendance Credits: 0
- MUS 099 - Freshman Orientation Credits: 0 (6 noon sessions)

Music Senior Experience
The Music Senior Experience allows students an opportunity to integrate their academic and performance training in music with the broad-based liberal arts curriculum of Nazareth College. It includes a publicly performed senior recital/project and a written component that reflects upon the integration of music and the liberal arts tradition. The Music Therapy Internship is a six-month, 1040-hour internship at an American Music Therapy Association approved clinical training center. Application is made upon departmental approval. Internship must be completed within two years after graduation to become eligible to take the national certification examination. |
