Mathematicians discover and describe patterns, create and utilize structures, discern and transform relationships, identify and optimize connections, reason logically and solve complex problems. Companies hire our mathematics majors to think creatively and comprehensively, manage resources, organize information, assess options, investigate risk and clearly communicate technical information in insurance, information, industrial, financial and other fields.
Our faculty invite students to engage in undergraduate research, to gain experience through internships, and to present their work at national conferences. Our mathematics courses feature inquiry-based learning and integrate use of mathematical software to explore and understand mathematical concepts. Our students develop essential written and oral communication skills, and immerse themselves in critical thinking as they analyze and solve problems.
Mathematics majors are encouraged to complete a minor in an area of interest such as information technology, business administration, international studies, philosophy, or foreign language. Our courses in Financial Mathematics prepare students to take the initial exam offered by the Actuarial Casualty Society and the Society of Actuaries. Some mathematics majors earn inclusive teaching certification at the childhood or adolescence level. Math majors are prepared for graduate study, often they immediately begin careers.
All Nazareth students majoring in mathematics receive a Bachelor of Arts degree. We offer three major programs:
- Mathematics
- Mathematics with Inclusive Childhood/Early Childhood Education
- Mathematics with Adolescence Education
The department also offers a minor in mathematics.
