The major in communication sciences and disorders provides a strong foundation in communication and basic speech and hearing sciences.    As part of a pre-professional program in speech-language pathology and audiology, students explore the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of disorders of speech, hearing, and language to prepare for graduate study. Students who follow the major sequence and satisfy course requirements and competencies may apply to do closely-supervised clinical work in the on-campus Speech and Language Clinic or in off-campus experiential learning opportunities.

Completing the major and additional coursework required by the New York State Department of Education can satisfy requirements for initial certification as a Teacher of Students with Speech and Language Disabilities. Students pursuing initial teacher certification must meet GPA and other standards and complete a student teaching experience, in addition to successful completion of two semesters of on-campus clinical work.

As seniors, students participate in senior seminars that promote the integration of the liberal arts and the major by encouraging critical thinking, problem solving, reflection on professional experiences, and discussion of ethical and cultural issues. The seminars encourage an appreciation for the relationship of the major with other disciplines such as history, philosophy, religious studies, and the natural and social sciences.
