The Department of Mathematics conveys to students that mathematics has both beauty and utility, is both an art and a science, and is distinguished by virtue of its use of proofs. We prepare students for teaching, for graduate school, and for careers that apply mathematics in a variety of ways.

Further, the Department is committed to a mathematical sciences curriculum that is responsive to the needs of its students, and provides course and program offerings to both majors and non-majors that present suitable academic challenge, in a supportive environment, “based on the expectation that all students can learn mathematics.” (In accordance with the Mathematical Association of America’s Guidelines for Programs and Departments in Undergraduate Mathematical Sciences.)

Inherent in our preparation of those who are preparing to teach school mathematics is the belief that they are ultimately responsible for the future of the discipline and that with thorough preparation they can convey its power, beauty, and utility to others.

Underlying this mission is the belief that the Department must make meaningful use of modern technologies as well as diverse methods of instruction to enhance teaching and learning and increase students’ understanding of mathematical concepts.

All Nazareth students majoring in mathematics receive a Bachelor of Arts degree and a broad background that will prepare them for work in any area of mathematics. We offer three programs for our majors:

  • Mathematics major
  • Mathematics with Inclusive Childhood/Middle Childhood Education major (Childhood Education, Teaching Students with Disabilities at the Childhood Level, Middle Childhood Education - Mathematics Content Specialist, and Teaching Students with Disabilities at the Middle Childhood Level certifications)
  • Mathematics with Adolescence Education (Secondary Certification)

The department also offers a Minor in Mathematics.
