ENGL.Q 139 - Transmedia Adaptations

(PEQ - English/Literature) Transmedia Adaptations focuses on the fluid movement of stories, texts, and concepts as they cross many kinds of borders: genre, nation, time period, tradition and form/medium (poem, song, painting, television series, short story, music video, graphic narrative, video game, novel, feature film). The emphasis is on the ways in which certain themes, characters, concepts, and ideas metamorphose-or change-via the adaptation process. Students will engage with  questions like these: How do time period, nation, region, social group, gender, ethnicity, social class, age impact authors/artists? Which literary elements successfully cross borders (national, epochal, media) and which ones remain untranslatable? What happens to a theme, plot, character, concept as it moves from one work to another work, and how can we constructively compare and analyze such iterations?
