ENGL.Q 110 - Boundaries of the Human (Perspectives Enduring Questions) Does literary writing define humanity? Many literary critics will attest that writing helps us to define things; that writing clarifies our ideas (we do not know what we think until we write it out); that through writing we disseminate and teach ideas about how we should act or what we should value. This course studies creative nonfiction as a type of writing that uses strategies of fiction-writing (setting, characterization, plot, dialogue, etc) to help present an inquiry into the power of writing to define, clarify–even teach us–about what it means to be human. Does literary writing–and creative nonfiction specifically–define what it means to be human?
