MUS 470 - Musical Borrowing This course examines methods and techniques through which composers and musicians have borrowed existing music from the Middle Ages to the present, including practices in classical, jazz, pop, and global traditions. It emphasizes how the functions and meanings of borrowing have shifted across history, tracing diverse approaches such as the cantus firmus, quotation, recomposition, and digital sampling within their cultural and stylistic contexts.
