Financial Aid Information

Federal Title IV Refund Policy: Term Withdrawal,Leave of Absence, Financial Aid, and Tuition Reduction Eligibility

Students must notify the Center for Student Success in person, in writing or by telephone of their intent to withdraw from all courses in the semester.

Our Title IV/financial aid withdrawal date is the date the student provides official notification, to an office designated by Nazareth College, of  intent to take a leave of absence (LOA) or a complete withdrawal (WD); or begins the Nazareth College leave of absence (LOA) or withdrawal (WD) process, whichever date is earlier.

Once the student completes the official withdrawal process, the Center for Student Success sends the LOA/WD form to the Registration and Records Office for processing. That office will enter the beginning of the LOA or WD as the date the student signed the LOA/WD form.

Reduction of tuition charges will be determined based on the withdrawal date. Dates for determining reduction of tuition charges are published on the Student Accounts’ website.

Recipients of Federal student aid who withdraw from all classes in a semester (term withdrawal/leave of absence) earn eligibility for Federal student aid on a daily proportioned basis up until 60% of the semester has passed. All days during the semester (except for breaks of 5 days or more and their attendant weekends) are counted. If a student has not earned all of their Federal assistance, funds are returned to Federal programs in the following order: Federal Direct Subsidized loans, Federal Direct Unsubsidized loans, Federal Direct PLUS loans, other Title IV assistance. Students are responsible for repaying remaining loan funds according to the terms of their promissory notes. Federal Work Study earnings are not required to be repaid.  Note: Because tuition charges continue to be assessed by the Student Accounts Office at a percentage rate higher than the rate at which Federal policy considers Title IV student aid to be earned, students may incur a sizeable uncovered debt to Nazareth when the College makes required repayment of unearned financial aid to its source. Gift assistance provided by Nazareth College continues to be credited in the same percentage as Student Accounts charges tuition.

Post withdrawal disbursements of Federal student aid for which the student may be eligible will be made first from grant sources, then from loans. Within 14 days of determination of term withdrawal, the college will notify the student in writing the amount and type of funds available for post withdrawal disbursement together with explanation of the option to accept or decline all or part of this aid. The student must advise the college of their decision within 14 days or the potential disbursement is forfeited. Students will not be eligible for a late disbursement of their loan if it is the second disbursement of the loan, e.g. a student borrows for fall and spring semesters, fall disbursement is received, student registers for spring but withdraws before disbursement is made. This student will not be eligible for the second disbursement of the loan.

General Information - Financial Aid

Nazareth College encourages students who feel that they and their families are unable to afford the full cost of a private education to apply for all sources of financial aid for which they may be eligible.

Qualifying students will receive a financial aid offer composed of a combination of scholarship, grant, loan and work study assistance, which will vary according to demonstrated need and individual circumstances. Awards are renewed annually, contingent upon satisfactory academic progress* and program pursuit and, when applicable, timeliness of application and continued demonstrated need for assistance. Students must file a FAFSA each year to qualify for need-based assistance. Scholarship students must meet other qualifications, such as maintaining a particular cumulative GPA (grade point average), or continuance in the major for which the scholarship was awarded. All Nazareth College scholarships/grants require full time attendance.

* See also Satisfactory Academic Progress later in this section for information on satisfactory academic progress standards which apply to all federal, state and Nazareth scholarships/grants.

All inquiries about financial assistance and scholarships should be directed to the Financial Aid Office, Nazareth College by calling 585-389-2310 or emailing finaid@naz.edu.

Matriculated students enrolled in one of Nazareth College’s study abroad Residential Programs, Exchange Programs, or Short Term Programs and charged Nazareth College tuition will be eligible for Nazareth College scholarships/grants, NYS aid, and Federal aid as applicable. (Note, however, that Nazareth room grants are not awarded for terms off campus.) Matriculated students enrolled in another college or institution’s study abroad program and not paying Nazareth College tuition will not be eligible for Nazareth College scholarships/grants. The student must apply for and be approved for a consortium or contractual agreement through the Financial Aid Office to determine if Federal and/or NYS financial assistance is applicable.

Prospective applicants for financial aid should file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by the February 1 priority filing deadline. Federal Pell Grants

Federal Pell Grants are available from the federal government to help high need undergraduate students meet the cost of education. Pell Grant eligibility is determined by filing a FAFSA annually and is based upon the federal needs analysis. Grant amounts vary according to Congressional appropriation, full-time or part-time enrollment and cost of education. Students who already earned a bachelor’s degree are not eligible.

Nazareth College Pell Grant policy is to recalculate the Pell Grant award for enrollment changes that occur each term through the end of the undergraduate add/drop period (first week of classes). Enrollment changes (add or withdrawal of a course) that occur after the add/drop period will not result in a Pell Grant award recalculation. However, if a student withdraws from class(es) that the student never began attendance in, the Pell Grant must be recalculated to exclude those class(es) in the Pell award calculation and the award will be adjusted accordingly.

The Pell Grant is limited by federal law to a lifetime equivalent of six full time years. Additional information regarding the Pell Lifetime Eligibility (LEU) may be found at: http://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/types/grants-scholarships/pell/calculate-eligibility

In order to receive the grant, an eligible student must complete a TEACH grant application, Agreement To Serve, Counseling and FAFSA annually. Applicants should be aware that failure to complete the service obligation will result in the grant being converted to a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan with interest accrued and capitalized from the date of the original disbursement. **TEACH grant funding and continuance is not guaranteed and is subject to federal budget approval.

Additional information regarding the TEACH Grant may be found on the Nazareth Financial Aid Forms page at https://www2.naz.edu/tuition-aid/forms/ and https://studentaid.ed.gov/understand-aid/types/grants/teach.

NEW! As of July 1, 2021, new Direct Subsidized Loans will not lose their subsidy benefits before entering repayment and during periods of deferment.

If you were a new borrower on or after July 1, 2013 and before July 1, 2021, certain types of enrollment may have caused you to become responsible for the interest that accrued on your Direct Subsidized Loans when the U.S. Department of Education usually would have paid it. This was called losing interest subsidy.

Your federal loan servicer would have notified you if you had become responsible for paying the interest on your Direct Subsidized Loans during that time period.

If your Direct Subsidized Loans had lost their subsidy benefits before July 1 ,2021 and you have a balance greater than zero on July 1, 2021, those loans will have their subsidy benefits retroactively reinstated http://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/types/loans/subsidized-unsubsidized#eligibility-time-limit

In certain situations, you can have your federal student loan forgiven, canceled, or discharged. For more information, please visit: https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/repay-loans/forgiveness-cancellation.

Consolidation

Consolidating your federal education loans can simplify your payments, but it also can result in the loss of some benefits. A Direct Consolidation Loan allows you to consolidate (combine) multiple federal education loans into one loan. The result is a single monthly payment instead of multiple payments. Loan consolidation can also give you access to additional loan repayment plans and forgiveness programs. For more information, please visit: https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/repay-loans/consolidation#eligible-loans

Deferment and Forbearance

Under certain circumstances, you can receive a deferment or forbearance that allows you to temporarily stop making your federal student loan payments or to temporarily reduce the amount of your federal student loan payments. This may help you avoid default. For more information, please visit: https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/repay-loans/deferment-forbearance.

Federal Work Study Program

The Federal Work Study (FWS) award provides employment opportunities in various campus offices. Work-Study awards are offered to full-time students with financial need, based on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). On average, students work 6-8 hours per week. Students are paid at an hourly rate and receive paychecks every two weeks for the hours worked. The Work-Study hourly wage is paid directly to the student as earned, thus the FWS award is not credited on the student’s term bill.

Nazareth Scholarship/Grant Requirements

All scholarships and grants require full-time attendance.  Nazareth merit scholarships are determined at the time of acceptance.  Merit scholarship renewal eligibility is reviewed annually based on Nazareth cumulative GPA.  If the minimum requirement is not met, one semester of probation is granted.  After the probationary period, if the cumulative GPA remains below the requirement, the scholarship will be reduced by 20% of the value.  If, after subsequent semesters, the cumulative GPA requirement is met, you may request full reinstatement of the award for future semesters.  Waivers of this policy are not granted.  Need-based grant renewal is reviewed annually based on demonstrated financial need as determined by the Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

With the exception of the merit scholarships listed below, students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 for all other Nazareth College scholarships/grants.  In addition, Room Grants require residency in on-campus housing and program-based awards require continued enrollment in the academic programs for which the award was granted.

Military Policy

Military Service and Veteran Transfer Credits:

DANTES (DSST) - DSSTs are credit by examination tests designed to allow a student to demonstrate proficiency in an area of study normally taught at a college or university. These tests are frequently used in conjunction with CLEP. DSST standardized exams are considered on a case by case basis for transfer credit.

ACE - Transfer credit may also be awarded for courses recommended by the American Council on Education (ACE). ACE provides transcript evaluations for military training. Upon receiving an official military transcript, military training can be evaluated for possible credit towards one’s degree. This will be determined on a case by case basis. A service member can request their military transcript using the link: https://jst.doded.mil/jst/ (Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard) or https://www.airuniversity.af.edu/Barnes/CCAF/Display/Article/803247/ (Air Force).

CLEP - Nazareth College participates in the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) of the College Entrance Examination Board. Students can earn credits by achieving satisfactory scores on the general and subject examinations. GI Bill benefits can be used to cover CLEP exam costs. For English Composition credit, the English Composition with Essay exam is required. Credit may be earned for up to 12 hours in any department and/or a total of 30 hours. One may retake a CLEP exam 3 months following the previous testing date.

For more information on transferring credits please visit the Academic Advisement website.

Military Services and Veterans Financial Aid

Prospective Military Students and/or Dependents:

The following websites contain information on resources, aid options, default rates, graduation rates and provide comparative school costs so that prospective students can make informed decisions about where to attend school.

  1. The College Scorecard is a planning tool and resource to assist prospective students and their families as they evaluate options in selecting a school.
  2. The College Navigator is a consumer tool that provides school information to include tuition and fees, retention and graduation rates, use of financial aid, student loan default rates and features a cost calculator and school comparison tool.
  3. The College Financing Plan (formerly, Financial Aid Shopping Sheet) is a model aid award letter designed to simplify the information that prospective students receive about costs and financial aid so they can easily compare institutions and make informed decisions about where to attend school.
  4. Paying for College can be used by prospective students to enter the names of up to three schools and receive detailed financial information on each one and to enter actual financial aid award information.
  5. Our Financial Aid Office’s Tuition & Aid website details how to apply for all types of aid including Title IV.

Private Loans: Service members and non-service members alike may first want to contact any financial aid counselor before considering private loan aid so they have a clear understanding of all other available financial aid (State and Federal Title IV). Loans have to be repaid and private loans generally cost more in the long run and do not offer forgiveness options, etc.

The institution’s Cohort Default Rate/ Repayment Rate percent of student borrowers and comparison to national averages is available on the College Financing Plan after filing the FAFSA and on the Federal College Navigator website.

Military-Affiliated Student Tuition & Fee Deferral Policy

Nazareth College will allow military-affiliated students with Veteran Affairs (VA), Department of Defense (DoD), and/or New York State Military/Veteran tuition and/or fees educational benefits to attend a course of education for up to 90 days from the date the beneficiary provides one of the following:

  • Certificate of Eligibility
  • Statement of Benefits
  • Approved DoD Tuition Assistance Voucher
  • Listed on the NYS Recruitment Incentive & Retention Program (RIRP) Approved Roster
  • Valid VA Form 28-1905.
  • Other related approved military-affiliated educational benefit’s verification document

This allows a student to attend the course(s) until VA, DoD, and/or New York State provides payment to the institution. NOTE: Extension to 90-day deferral will be granted to students upon delay of payment beyond 90 days. In accordance with the Veterans Benefits and Transition Act of 2018 (38 USC 3679), Nazareth College will not impose a penalty (e.g., loss of access to NazNet, meal plan, late fee, etc…), additional cost (processing fees), or require the beneficiary to borrow additional funds to cover tuition and fees due to late payment from the VA, DoD, and/or New York State.

Return of Federal Tuition Assistance

Military Tuition Assistance (TA) is awarded to a student under the assumption that the student will attend school for the entire period for which the assistance is awarded. When a student withdraws, the student may no longer be eligible for the full amount of TA funds originally awarded.

To comply with Department of Defense policy Nazareth College will return any unearned TA funds on a prorated basis through the 60% portion for which the funds were provided. TA funds are earned proportionally during an enrollment period, with unearned funds returned based upon when a student stops attending. These funds are returned to the military service branch.

Return of Federal Military & Veteran Educational Benefits

When a serving service member, veteran, spouse, or other family member (dependent), using their well-earned federal military and veterans educational benefits is to withdraw from the college, their student aid will be prorated in accordance with section 2(f) of Executive Order 13607 (Principles of Excellence).

Executive Order 13607 (Principles of Excellence) Section 2(f): agree to an institutional refund policy that is aligned with the refund of unearned student aid rules applicable to Federal student aid provided through the Department of Education under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965, as required under section 484B of that Act when students withdraw prior to course completion. For withdrawals due to military service obligations, please see Nazareth College’s Leave of Absence policy.

Other Outside Awards

Students are encouraged to apply for any outside grants and scholarships for which they may be eligible. ACCES-VR, AmeriCorps, Community Foundation and Bureau of Indian Affairs are examples of outside agencies which help qualified students.

All scholarships from sources outside the Nazareth College campus must be reported to the Financial Aid Office as soon as they are awarded. Checks in support of these awards should be directed to the Financial Aid Office. Federal regulations require that all known sources of assistance be taken into account in determining the fulfillment of demonstrated need for student aid. For this reason, it is the policy of the college to utilize outside scholarships in the following manner:

  • To reduce any unmet federal demonstrated need
  • To reduce student self help in the form of Federal Work Study, and Federal Direct Loans
  • When Nazareth gift plus outside scholarships total more than the cost of tuition, to reduce campus gift assistance as appropriate to individual circumstances.

Rights and Responsibilities of Recipients

Students seeking financial assistance are responsible for filing timely, valid applications for the programs under which they may request aid. Additional information regarding how to apply and all student financial aid rights and responsibilities may be obtained from the Financial Aid Office, Smyth Hall, Room 43.

Financial aid policies, consumer information, and contact information for assistance in obtaining institutional or financial aid information may be found at https://www2.naz.edu/about/student-right-know

Verification

Verification is a federal review process required by the U.S. Department of Education by which we compare information from the completed FAFSA with the student and parent federal income tax information and other related documents. The U.S. Department of Education determines which student FAFSAs are selected for verification.

If your FAFSA is selected for verification, the taxable income must be verified by using the FAFSA’S IRS Data Retrieval Tool or by comparing it to an IRS Tax Return Transcript available at https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript. The IRS Data Retrieval Tool allows the student and parent(s) to pull in data from filed federal tax returns into the FAFSA. Students are strongly encouraged to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool.

In addition, a Federal Verification Worksheet must be completed to verify household and untaxed income information. The Federal Verification Worksheet (one for dependent students, one for independent students) is available at: http://www2.naz.edu/tuition-aid/forms/. Students will be contacted via their Nazareth College email if they are selected for financial verification. The required information must be provided within 30 days of request in order to receive any federal financial aid. For returning students, financial aid packages will not be determined until verification requirements are satisfactorily completed.

Enrollment Status Verification

Nazareth College participates in the National Student Clearinghouse (NSC) located in Herndon, Virginia. At least four times a semester (before classes begin; at the close of registration; after the last day to withdraw and receive a grade of W; and on the last class day of term) the college submits a computer file of students’ enrollment status to the Clearinghouse which, in turn, supplies verification of enrollment to all lending institutions and the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS). All loan deferment forms are forwarded to the NSC. Nazareth College does not supply this information directly to lending institutions.

If a student has registered late and/or had a drop/add/withdrawal processed to the term registration, this information may not be reported to the Clearinghouse until the next submission. The Clearinghouse asks that if a student receives a collection letter, the student is to follow the procedures as outlined.

  • Call the lending agency to see if a deferment form was received between the time the Clearinghouse supplied the information and the lending agency sent the collection letter.
  • You may verify your enrollment status by accessing the Clearinghouse website: www.nslc.org. In the “Students” section, you may confirm your own status and verify that your lender is using the Clearinghouse to supply enrollment data.
  • If an emergency exists, e.g. a student is being threatened with default, the Records Assistant (585-389-2803) may be able to intervene on the student’s behalf by faxing a verification of enrollment letter to the lending agency.

Delinquency and Default

A loan is delinquent when loan payments are not received by the due dates. A loan remains delinquent until you make up the missed payment(s) or receive a deferment or forbearance that covers the period when you were delinquent. If you are having trouble making your monthly loan payments, you should contact your loan servicer to discuss options to keep the loan in good standing.

A loan is in default for failure to repay the loan according to the terms agreed to in the promissory note. For most federal student loans, you will default if you have not made a payment in more than 270 days. If you default on a federal student loan, you lose eligibility to receive federal student aid and you may experience serious legal consequences.

For more information on delinquency or default, please visit: https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/repay-loans/default

Nazareth College Scholarships may be used toward tuition charges only. When combined with other grants, scholarships, or benefits restricted to tuition charges (i.e. NYS TAP, Veteran’s/ROTC tuition benefits, Tuition Exchange, etc.), the combination may not exceed full tuition.
