The B. A. in Global Sustainability at Nazareth College prepares students to understand the cultural, social, economic and political processes around the globe as they apply to issues of sustainability. Sustainability deals with the complexity and interdisciplinary nature of environmental issues and the needs/wants of human society. Students will understand the ways that people of various cultures and traditions impact the environment and how the environment impacts human activity. Students will have the ability to identify specific issues associated with a sustainability concern and will be able to propose ways to address the concern both orally and in writing.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Understand the global ramifications of environmental issues
- Master core concepts and apply them to global and environmental situations from areas of:
- Science
- Social Science
- Humanities
- Policy, Law, and Economics
- Ethics
- Understand the interdisciplinary nature of environmental issues
- Appreciate the ethical and cross-cultural contexts of environmental issues and the links between human and environmental systems
- Demonstrate systems thinking in observing and analyzing the interconnected reality of all species to develop a holistic view of the environment.
- Be able to apply appropriate research strategies to investigate environmental issues
- Be able to use a variety of information resources to gather data pertaining to a given environmental issue
- Be able to develop and articulate orally and in writing an action plan for dealing with environmental issues
- Be able to use data and appropriate data analysis as a factor in decision making regarding sustainability

Core Curriculum Requirements
All Nazareth students complete Core Curriculum coursework as part of their degree requirements. The Core provides a foundation in the liberal arts and sciences while guiding students to pose and explore their own intellectual questions. See Academic Policies and Procedures for specific core curriculum requirements.
Fundamental Studies Courses
Students complete one course in each of the requirement areas listed below (15-16 credits):
Language Proficiency
Language proficiency must be the equivalent of two-200 level college language grammar courses; this proficiency can be demonstrated in a number of ways:
- Completion of two language courses at the 200 level (e.g., FRN*221/222; ITL*221/222; SPN*221/222)
- Completion of high school and/or other college coursework that demonstrates the 200 level language proficiency noted above
- Completion of established language proficiency exams
- Native speaker mastery in a language other than English
Upper Division Courses
Upper Division Courses in Global Sustainability (5 credits required)
Electives
Students complete 9 elective credits from the list below.
Note - courses used to fulfill a Fundamental Studies requirement cannot also be used as elective credit.
Off-Campus Experience
All students must complete an off-campus experience with options such as long and short-term study abroad trips, service-learning trips and other opportunities both locally and out-of-town. Contact the Program Director for more details. Note - Program Director approval required for off-campus experience.
