American Studies Minor

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: ACADEMIC PROGRAMS A-Z

The program consists of 18 credits where students will gain additional perspectives and knowledge that will enrich most majors. Because the program takes an interdisciplinary approach, no more than 9 credit hours may be taken within a single academic discipline (as defined by course prefix).

Electives

The Electives will expand the student’s understanding of the local and national phenomena that are embedded in the larger social and economic systems to explore how American culture forms and practices have been and continue to be shaped by the movement of people, ideas, commodities, and resources across America. Students will choose at least one course from each area (A, B, and C).

In addition, the flexibility of the Electives encourages students to explore other areas of interest from that of their selected academic discipline and/or to seek out areas of study that will compliment their chosen major. For example: A Business Administration major might choose to take SOC 361 Mass Media and Popular Culture, PSC 341 Healthcare: U.S. Policy in Comparative Perspective, and PSC 417 Constitutional Law and the Media.
