Music Therapy - Major (Bachelor of Music)

This degree prepares students for a career in the music therapy profession. Completion of the degree coursework, which includes a 1040-hour internship, results in eligibility to sit for the national certification examination in music therapy. Successful completion of the examination results in the Music Therapist-Board Certified (MT-BC) credential awarded by the Certification Board for Music Therapists. Students find employment as therapists in public and private institutional settings as well as in private practice. Students may also matriculate to graduate programs.

The music therapy major program, approved by the American Music Therapy Association, includes course work in music, music therapy, social sciences, in addition to pre-clinical training practicum experiences with at least three different client populations and the Nazareth Liberal Arts Core.

Grades in all music therapy courses must be C or above and students must maintain a minimum 2.7 GPA. The completion of one additional psychology elective allows a psychology minor. Music Therapy students take a full Music core, culminating in a senior recital.

The Bachelor of Music in music therapy degree requires a minimum of 128 credits.

Upper Division Music Electives


Elective Requirements by Program

  • Bachelor of Arts in Music - complete one upper division music elective from either Music Theory or Music History & Literature
  • Bachelor of Music in Music Education - complete one upper division music elective from either Music Theory or Music History & Literature
  • Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy - complete one upper division music elective from either Music Theory or Music History & Literature
  • Bachelor of Music in Music Performance (Voice) - complete one upper division music electives in Music Theory and one upper division elective in Music History & Literature
  • Bachelor of Music in Music Performance (Piano, Instrumental) - complete four upper division music electives; at least one must be in Music Theory and one must be in Music History & Literature

Music Therapy Internship


The Music Therapy Internship is a minimum of 1040-hour internship at an American Music Therapy Association or a  Nazareth approved clinical training center. Application is made upon departmental approval. In most cases, students are considered full-time students during their internship. Diploma will be awarded upon completion of internship.

Music Senior Experience


The Music Senior Experience allows students an opportunity to integrate their academic and performance training in music with the broad-based liberal arts curriculum of Nazareth College. It includes a publicly performed senior recital/project and a written component that reflects upon the integration of music and the liberal arts tradition.
