Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Pre-Med, Pre-Dental and Pre-Vet Studies

This post-baccalaureate studies program is ideally designed for candidates who have already completed a bachelor’s degree in a non-science discipline but are now choosing to pursue a different or more advanced career path in the medical, dental, or veterinary fields. Taking courses on weekends, online, and evenings, students can complete the coursework necessary for application to medical school, dental school, or veterinary school.

Personalized attention and support is a hallmark of our program, which offers MCAT preparation, one-on-one advisement with the program director, assistance with letters of recommendation for application to medical, dental, and veterinary schools, and ongoing support as needed.

Program Options

Pre-Medical - The American Association of Medical Colleges reports an urgently increasing need for new doctors in the U.S., citing an industry recommendation for an additional 3,000 medical school graduates by 2015 to ensure an adequate supply of doctors by the year 2020.

Pre-Dental - The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration reports an approaching shortage of dentists, especially those to care for underserved populations. New dental school graduates are not replacing a rapidly aging generation of dentists quickly enough, leading to a sharp decline in the nation’s oral health workforce.

Pre-Veterinarian - According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, employment opportunities for veterinarians are projected to grow. Furthermore, the National Research Council reports a need for more veterinarians to support biomedical research, stating “research activity, particularly in neuroscience and transgenic research, which relies heavily on the use of laboratory animals, may have outpaced the supply of veterinarians trained in specialties related to biomedical research.”

Qualifications

Students eligible for the program must have completed an undergraduate degree at an accredited institution with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.4/4.0. We recommend that applicants should have completed the New York State Living Environment (Biology) Regents exam (or equivalent) with a minimum score of 85%. Undergraduate liberal arts majors are well suited for the program, and it is beneficial if students have completed one year of a freshmen English writing course.

Facilities

Nazareth’s facilities are state-of-the-art, including our Integrated Center for Math and Science, housed in the newly constructed Peckham Hall and featuring: a $1.2 million anatomy and physiology laboratory complete with a six-table human dissection suite & human performance equipment (metabolic cart); the Interdisciplinary Lab, a unique space designed for collaboration among math, chemistry, biology, and health and human services students; expanded lab space for faculty and student research initiatives; the 900-square-foot general biology lab.
