Music Therapy Major with Education Certification (Bachelor of Music)

This degree prepares students for a career in the music therapy profession. Completion of the degree, which includes a 1040-hour music therapy internship, results in eligibility to sit for the national certification examination in music therapy. Successful completion of the examination results in the Music Therapist-Board Certified (MT-BC) credential awarded by the Certification Board for Music Therapists. Students find employment as therapists in public and private institutional settings as well as in private practice. Students may also matriculate to graduate programs.

Music Education majors at Nazareth College qualify for Birth-12 Certification in Music from the New York State Department  of Education. (Currently, 41 states participate with New York in an Interstate Reciprocity Agreement that recognizes New York State Certification as a legitimate teaching credential within their states.) As a state certification requirement, students complete professional courses in instrumental, choral, and general music methods. In addition to a Music Senior Experience, the Student Teaching Experience serves as the capstone for this program. A minimum Grade Point Average of 2.7 is required for student teacher placement. To earn Teacher Certification, students must complete all professional courses (as defined in the Department Handbook) with a grade of “C” or higher, and must successfully pass the New York State Teacher Certification Exams. The Bachelor of Music Therapy with Education Certification Degree requires a minimum of 161.5 credits.

This degree plan is only appropriate for students with strong academic records and skills. Students must maintain a 2.7 GPA and successfully complete a full music core, culminating in a Senior Recital.

  • Bachelor of Arts in Music - complete one upper division music elective from either Music Theory or Music History & Literature
  • Bachelor of Music in Music Education - complete one upper division music elective from either Music Theory or Music History & Literature
  • Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy - complete one upper division music elective from either Music Theory or Music History & Literature
  • Bachelor of Music in Music Performance (Voice) - complete one upper division music electives in Music Theory and one upper division elective in Music History & Literature
  • Bachelor of Music in Music Performance (Piano, Instrumental) - complete four upper division music electives; at least one must be in Music Theory and one must be in Music History & Literature

Music Therapy Internship


The Music Therapy Internship is a minimum of 1040-hour internship at an American Music Therapy Association or a Nazareth approved clinical training center. Application is made upon departmental approval. In most cases, students are considered full-time students during their internship. Diploma will be awarded upon completion of internship.

Music Senior Experience


The Music Senior Experience allows students an opportunity to integrate their academic and performance training in music with the broad-based liberal arts curriculum of Nazareth College. It includes a publicly performed senior recital/project and a written component that reflects upon the integration of music and the liberal arts tradition.
