Chemistry Major with Adolescence Education

The Bachelor of Science program in chemistry with adolescence education prepares students for the initial certification requirements of the New York State Department of Education for Adolescence Education. Students who have completed all baccalaureate requirements with a minimum GPA of 2.7 in each required course of their certification program, who have demonstrated professional competence, and who have successfully completed the New York State teacher certification examinations will be eligible for initial certification.

Graduates of this program are also prepared for advanced studies in chemistry, or employment in chemical laboratories.

 

Student Learning Outcomes

1. Students completing courses in CAS at Nazareth College will communicate effectively through critical reading, writing, and oral presentation skills.

2. Students completing the program in chemistry or biochemistry at Nazareth College will demonstrate the ability to communicate the concepts and results of experiments through effective written and oral communication skills.

3. Students completing the program in chemistry or biochemistry at Nazareth College will be able to understand the objective of experiments, properly execute experiments, and accurately record and analyze results.

4. Students completing the program in chemistry or biochemistry at Nazareth College will be able to demonstrate mastery of core principles within the major sub-disciplines of chemistry: analytical, biochemistry, inorganic, organic and physical (SLO #1 for dept).

Required Courses for Chemistry Majors with Adolescence Education


In addition to the 55 credit core listed above, all Chemistry majors with Adolescence Education are required to take the following:

  • Two Semesters of Modern Foreign Language Credits:6
  • Any science course, with a Laboratory, other than CHM or PHY

Elective Courses for Chemistry Majors with AdolescenceEducation


Four credits of upper division chemistry electives are required. Two credits of laboratory are required in order to obtain American Chemical Society approval.

Chemistry Senior Experience


This course seeks to integrate the technical aspects of chemistry with the ability to communicate scientific information effectively. To achieve this goal, students are assigned a topic of current scientific interest that combines chemistry with other disciplines in order to answer some fundamental question. Students demonstrate their ability to independently research and communicate their findings in a professional manner to an audience of their peers and faculty.

  • Perspectives Enduring Question (PEQ) Credits: 6
  • Perspectives Enduring Question (PEQ) Science with Lab (Not CHM or PHY) Credits: 4
  • Health and Wellness Credits: 0
  •  NOTE: It is recommended that students use one course required in the major to count as one of their Integrative Studies (IS) courses.

Senior Year


  • Electives Credits: 6 (possible Integrative Studies (IS) courses)
