Theatre Arts Major with Adolescence Certification in English

Students in the theatre arts program pursue courses that include an introduction to all phases of theater arts, academic as well as studio. This exposure provides a broad foundation in theater history and dramatic literature, production styles, and design, along with practical experience in performance studies. Electives allowing limited areas of concentration and project courses in the senior year are designed for study in specialized areas under direct faculty supervision.

Students who elect to pursue teacher certification as a part of this program take special instruction in teaching methods and philosophy through the English department, in addition to their required coursework in the education department. In order to be eligible for the Professional Semester (student teaching), students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.7.

Theatre Arts Core


Students in the Theatre Arts department are required to take the following core courses:

Students select two movement courses from the following:

Students take five one credit production labs from four different areas:

  • Acting
  • Assistant Stage Manager
  • Costume Crew
  • Scenic
  • Lighting
  • Sound
  • Props
  • Make-up
  • Special Project
  • Stage Management

English Requirements


Students must complete the following English courses in order to qualify for Adolescence Certification in English:

Literature Courses


Students must complete the following:
  • One ENGL upper-division elective

English Education Requirements


In addition to the Literature requirements above, students must complete the following English Education courses:

Required Theatre Arts Elective Courses


Theatre Arts majors must complete six credits in theatre electives. One elective must be from the 200 level and the other elective from the 300/400 level.  These electives allow for limited specialization within the program concentration.

Note: Any course already taken as a requirement may not also be counted as an elective.

Required Courses for Adolescence Education


The following courses are required for Adolescence Education for majors in Biology, Chemistry, English, History, Mathematics, Theatre, (English Certification) French, Italian, German, or Spanish.

  • Student Teaching and Curriculum Methodology: These courses hold the academic department acronym. These course are numbered 457, Curriculum Methodology: Middle School and Senior High in their area of certification and 479, Student Teaching or professional semester in their area of certification (Ex: HIS 457 or MTH 457).

 

Additional Program Option: Teaching Students with Disabilities at the Adolescence level (Grades 7 - 12) (Dual Certification)


Students also have the option of completing required coursework and field experiences that would lead to another certification in Teaching Students with Disabilities at the Adolescence level. This dual certification option is designed to provide the knowledge base to support student learning in content areas at the adolescence level, as well as to specifically meet the needs of students who have special education needs in grades 7-12 by means of differentiated instruction and collaborative teaching.

Students who elect to pursue this option complete the following courses in addition to the required courses for Adolescence Education listed above:

Theatre Arts Senior Experience


The Senior Experience for Theatre majors consists of a required seminar (THA 452- Seminar in Theatre with a zero-credit internship).  In this course, the students reflect on their major experience, and they are given opportunities to integrate material from theatre and other core areas of the college experience.  A final project is required in some phase of production, design or theory.
