Mathematics Major with Inclusive Childhood/Middle Childhood Education Major

The mathematics major with inclusive childhood/middle childhood education major is designed for students preparing to teach at the elementary level or to teach mathematics at the middle school level, and/or to teach students with special
needs. The mathematics portion of this program consists of 36 credits of mathematics, including exploring Mathematics, the History of Mathematics, Number Theory, and the Foundations of Geometry. Students also take a computer applications course, as well as science courses in two different areas. In addition, students take the appropriate education courses to prepare them for the classroom.

Students are officially accepted into the mathematics major after completion of Mth 201, Introduction to Mathematical Structures, with a C grade or better. All mathematics majors must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0, both in the major and overall, and a minimum GPA of 2.7 in education.

Mathematics Core

The Mathematics core provides the foundation for all of our programs. Students take the 6 courses listed below. The individual programs add mathematical depth and breadth. The Senior Comprehensive Examination requires the students to internalize this core.

Required Courses for Inclusive Childhood/Middle Childhood Education Major

The following courses are required for the Inclusive Childhood/Middle Childhood Education major. The major prepares students for the initial teacher certification requirements in four certification areas: Childhood Education (Grades 1-6), Teaching Students with Disabilities at the Childhood Level (Grades 1-6), Middle Childhood Education - Generalist or Content Specialist (Grades 5-9), and Teaching Students with Disabilities at the Middle Childhood Level (Grades 5-9).

*Students in the Inclusive Childhood/Middle Childhood major who are pursuing a B.A. degree must take all electives in liberal arts areas in order to earn the 90 liberal arts credits that are required for the degree.

Mathematics Senior Experience

The Senior Experience for Mathematics is designed to promote integration of the core topics. In MTH 399, Problem Solving, students are challenged to use all facets of their mathematics background to solve diverse and open-ended mathematical problems. The skills from each of the core disciplines are tested in the Comprehensive Examination, MTH 499.
