Mathematics Major with Adolescence Education

The mathematics major with adolescence education program is for students preparing to teach mathematics at the middle or high school level. This program consists of 40 credits of mathematics, including Calculus III, History of Mathematics, Number Theory, and Foundations of Geometry. Students also take a methods course for teaching secondary mathematics, two semesters of calculus-based physics, and one semester of a programming language. In addition, students take the appropriate education courses to prepare them for the classroom.

Students are officially accepted into the mathematics major after completion of MTH 201, Introduction to Mathematical Structures, with a C grade or better. All mathematics majors must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0, both in the major and overall, and a minimum GPA of 2.7 in education.

Mathematics Core


The Mathematics core provides the foundation for all of our programs. Students take the 6 courses listed below. The individual programs add mathematical depth and breadth. The Senior Comprehensive Examination requires the students to internalize this core.

In addition to the core courses listed above, all Mathematics / Adolescence Education students are required to take the 33 credit hours listed below.

Students select nine credits from the courses listed below as upper division Mathematics electives:

Required Courses for Adolescence Education


The following courses are required for Adolescence Education for majors in Biology, Chemistry, English, History, Mathematics, Theatre, (English Certification) French, Italian, German, or Spanish.

  • Student Teaching and Curriculum Methodology: These courses hold the academic department acronym. These course are numbered 457, Curriculum Methodology: Middle School and Senior High in their area of certification and 479, Student Teaching or professional semester in their area of certification (Ex: HIS 457 or MTH 457).

 

Additional Program Option: Teaching Students with Disabilities at the Adolescence level (Grades 7 - 12) (Dual Certification)


Students also have the option of completing required coursework and field experiences that would lead to another certification in Teaching Students with Disabilities at the Adolescence level. This dual certification option is designed to provide the knowledge base to support student learning in content areas at the adolescence level, as well as to specifically meet the needs of students who have special education needs in grades 7-12 by means of differentiated instruction and collaborative teaching.

Students who elect to pursue this option complete the following courses in addition to the required courses for Adolescence Education listed above:

Mathematics Senior Experience


The Senior Experience for Mathematics is designed to promote integration of the core topics. In MTH 399, Problem Solving, students are challenged to use all facets of their mathematics background to solve diverse and open-ended mathematical problems. The skills from each of the core disciplines are tested in the Comprehensive Examination, MTH 499.
