Gerontology is a multi-disciplinary approach to every aspect of human functioning in the later years. Courses in Nazareth’s Gerontology minor draw upon disciplines such as the social science, humanities, and natural sciences, with a perspective that reflects the complexity of the environments within which individuals age.
Part of Nazareth’s Health Professions consortium, the Gerontology minor is multi-disciplinary and consists of 18 credit hours. Students can combine a minor in Gerontology with coursework in any department, such as Social Work, Psychology, Physical Therapy, Music Therapy, Pre-Med, Communication Sciences and Disorders, Nursing, or Business. Nazareth’s program in Gerontology prepares students for entry into the workforce, or for further study at the post-graduate level.
Students with a Gerontology minor and an overall grade point average of at least 3.3 on a 4.0 scale may become members of Nazareth’s Alpha Lambda Chapter of Sigma Phi Omega, the national academic honor and professional society in gerontology.
There are excellent career opportunities in gerontology, which is among the most rapidly growing employment areas. America is quickly changing from a young nation to a society of older adults. A career in gerontology also offers many opportunities to work with culturally and ethnically diverse clients and co-workers in a variety of settings. Graduates may take on leadership roles as practitioners or managers of programs focusing on older persons or apply their knowledge and expertise to concerns in their communities and personal lives. Nazareth’s Gerontology program also enhances learning in other disciplines and provides a strong background for entrance into graduate school.
