Education: Initial Teacher Certification in Inclusive Education

An overall GPA of 2.7 is expected of students enrolled in teacher preparatory programs. All students in teacher certification programs must have a GPA of 2.7 before they enroll for the student teaching semester.

Students will be eligible for initial certification when they have completed all requirements for the baccalaureate degree. They will have demonstrated competence at 2.0 or above in each required course of their certification programs, satisfactorily demonstrated competence to teach during student teaching, and have successfully completed the New York State Teacher Certification Examinations: Liberal Arts and Science Test (LAST), the Written Assessment of Teaching Skills (ATS-W) and the appropriate Content Specialty Test (CST).

Below is a semester-by-semester breakdown of when the required courses for Inclusive Education should be taken.

Spring - Sophomore Year

EDU 204 - History and Philosophy of Education Credits: 3

EDU 090 - Orientation to the Personal Electronic Portfolio Credits: 0 (Fall Only)
EDU 475 - Health Education, Child Abuse, and Violence Prevention Workshop Credits: 0
INCL 355 - Introduction to Literacy and Differentiated Learning Credits: 3 (Fall Only)
INCL 370 - Learning Theory and Curriculum for Diverse Learners Credits: 3 (Fall Only)
Note: For Foreign Language students studying abroad during the junior, INCL 355 and INCL 370 must be taken during the sophomore year.

Spring - Junior Year

INCL 360 - Inclusive Practices in the Construction Of Meaning in Mathematics/Science/ Social Studies Credits: 3 (Spring Only)
INCL 372 - Developmentally Appropriate Strategies For Reading in the Content Areas Credits: 3 (Spring Only)
