Mathematics Major with Adolescence Education

Our Mathematics Major with Adolescence Education program is designed for students preparing to teach mathematics at the middle and high school level. This program consists of 40 credits of mathematics including Calculus III, History of Mathematics, Number Theory, and Foundations of Geometry. Students also take a methods course for teaching secondary mathematics, two semesters of calculus-based Physics and one semester of a programming language. In addition, students take the appropriate education courses to prepare them for the classroom.

Students are officially accepted into the Mathematics major after completion of MTH 201, Introduction to Mathematical Structures, with a C grade or better.

All Mathematics majors must maintain a 2.0 GPA, both in the major and overall and a 2.7 GPA for education.


Mathematics Core


The Mathematics core provides the foundation for all of our programs. Students take the 6 courses listed below. The individual programs add mathematical depth and breadth. The Senior Comprehensive Examination requires the students to internalize this core.

In addition to the core courses listed above, all Mathematics / Adolescence Education students are required to take the 33 credit hours listed below.

Mathematics Senior Experience


The Senior Experience for Mathematics is designed to promote integration of the core topics. In MTH 399, Problem Solving, students are challenged to use all facets of their mathematics background to solve diverse and open-ended mathematical problems. The skills from each of the core disciplines are tested in the Comprehensive Examination, MTH 499.

Required Courses for Adolescence Education


The following courses are required for Adolescence Education for majors in Biology, Chemistry, English, History, Mathematics, French, Italian, German, and Spanish.

In addition to these courses, each student takes a department course numbered DEPT 457, Curriculum Methodology: Middle School and Senior High  in their area of certification (These courses have a total of 100 hours of fieldwork required).


Additional Program Option: Teaching students with Disabilities at the Adolescence level


Additional Program Option: Teaching students with Disabilities at the Adolescence level (Grades 7 - 12) (Dual Certification)

Students also have the option of completing required coursework and field experiences that would lead to another certification in Teaching Students with Disabilities at the Adolescence level. This dual certification option is designed to provide the knowledge base to support student learning in content areas at the adolescence level, as well as to specifically meet the needs of students with disabilities in secondary classrooms by means of differentiated instruction and collaborative teaching.
