Annotations and Extensions

Annotations and Extensions are offered for students with teacher certification who seek to extend their certification to a new area or to deepen their understanding in their current certification area.

BILINGUAL EXTENSION
 
Program Description: This program of study focuses on bilingual education. Students who successfully complete this program will extend their New York State Teacher Certification to allow students to teach in bilingual settings of their original certification. For example, if a teacher is certified at the childhood level, the bilingual extension will extend their certification to include bilingual childhood level teaching.

Admission Requirements:

  1. Enrollment in Childhood Inclusive Education Program or TESOL Program at Nazareth College.
  2. Demonstration of Spanish proficiency by passing the Language Proficiency Assessment (LPA) in Spanish.
OR
  1. Completion of a baccalaureate degree at an accredited institution with a cumulative index of 3.0 and a B average in the major field. Demonstration of Spanish proficiency by passing the Language Proficiency Assessment (LPA) in Spanish.
  2. Presentation of official transcripts.
  3. Two letters of recommendation.
  4. Application and fee.
  5. Completion of the personal-professional statement as described on the application form.
  6. Copy of teacher certification in Childhood Education or TESOL.

Required Course Credits:
  • 6 credit hours if enrolled in Nazareth TESOL program, or hold TESOL certification.
  • 12 credit hours if enrolled in Nazareth Childhood Inclusive Education Program, or hold Childhood Education certification.

COORDINATOR OF WORK-BASED LEARNING EXTENSION
 
Program Description:  This program of study focuses on the management of a multi cultural workforce, with special attention to issues affecting an organization’s human resources.  Students who successfully complete this program will extend their New York State

Teacher Certification:

Admission Requirements:

  1. Enrollment in Business and Marketing Education Program at Nazareth College.
OR
  1. Completion of a baccalaureate degree at an accredited institution with a cumulative index of 3.0 and a B average in the major field.
  2. Presentation of official transcripts.
  3. Two letters of recommendation.
  4. Application and fee.
  5. Completion of the personal-professional statement as described on the application form.
  6. Copy of teacher certification in Business and Marketing Education.

GIFTED EDUCATION EXTENSION


Program Description:
This nine-credit hour graduate level program is designed for certified teachers who are interested in working with students who are gifted and talented, and would like to receive an extension certificate in this area. The program focuses on deepening teachers’ understandings of students with gifts and talents, of designing curriculum and differentiated learning experiences for students with gifts and talents, and of gifted education in the context of school organization and community.

Teachers who successfully complete this program will receive an extension on their New York State Teacher Certification:  Extension in Gifted Education

Admission Requirements:

  1. Enrollment in a Master of Science in Education degree program at Nazareth College.
  2. OR
  3. Completion of a baccalaureate degree OR a Master’s degree at an accredited institution with a minimal cumulative index of 3.0 and a B average or better.
  4. Presentation of official transcripts.
  5. One letter of recommendation.
  6. Application and fee.
  7. Completion of the personal-professional statement as described on the Application form.
  8. Copy of teacher certification.

MIDDLE CHILDHOOD EXTENSION
 
Program Description:  This program of study focuses on excellence in middle level education: the twin purposes of academic preparation and individual self-development for all young adolescents.

Students who successfully complete this program will extend their New York State Teacher Certification: 
If students are certified at the childhood level, the Middle Childhood Extension will extend their certification up to Grades 7-9. If students are certified at the adolescence level, the Middle Childhood Extension will extend their certification down to Grades 5-6.

Admission Requirements:

  1. Enrollment in Childhood or Adolescence Inclusive Education Program at Nazareth College.
  2. 30 credit hour major/concentration in Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, English, Foreign Languages, Mathematics, Physics, or Social Studies.
OR
  1. Completion of a baccalaureate degree at an accredited institution with a cumulative index of 3.0 and a B average in the major field. Completion of 30 credit hour major/concentration in Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, English, Foreign Languages, Mathematics, Physics, or Social Studies.
  2. Presentation of official transcripts.
  3. Two letters of recommendation.
  4. Application and fee.
  5. Completion of the personal-professional statement as described on the application form.
  6. Copy of teacher certification in Childhood or Adolescence Education.

SEVERE OR MULTIPLE DISABILITIES ANNOTATION
 
Program Description:  This program of study focuses on deepening students’ understandings of teaching students with severe or multiple disabilities. Students select a focus on either “Students with Challenging Behaviors,” or “Students with Functional Skill Instruction Needs.” Both stands include inclusive strength-based perspectives.


Students who successfully complete this program will receive an annotation on their New York State Teacher Certification:

  1. Enrollment in an Inclusive Education Program at Nazareth College.
OR
  1. Completion of a baccalaureate degree at an accredited institution with a cumulative index of 3.0 and a B average in the major field.

  3. Two letters of recommendation.
  4. Application and fee.
  5. Completion of the personal-professional statement as described on the application form.
  6. Copy of teacher certification in Teaching Students with Disabilities.

Students may take these courses as elective credit within the Inclusive Education: Additional Certification, Same Developmental Level Programs and the Inclusive Childhood Education: Professional Certification Program.
