Department Mission Statement

The Nazareth College Department of Music is a community of musicians that acknowledges the power of music and its importance as a tool of cultural expression for both the performer and the listener through learning, teaching, performance, research and the study of the various professional domains in the field of music, including:  music education, music therapy, music performance, music history, music theory, and music/business.

Department Vision Statement

Grounded in the importance of music as a traditional liberal art, the Nazareth College Department of Music strives to be a premiere private liberal arts institution for the education of undergraduate and graduate music students.

Department Objectives

  1. To provide degree programs, informed by a strong foundation in the liberal arts, that integrate studies in performance, the academic domains of music, and the professional careers.
  2. To engage students as active learners and practitioners
  3. To foster solo and ensemble performances that demonstrate the highest standards in artistic excellence acquired through the synthesis of technical, analytical, historical, and socio-cultural proficiencies.
  4. To provide a strong foundation for future study in the field of music.
  5. To develop in students the capacity and leadership skills necessary to advocate for the importance of music in fostering human development and as a means of cultural expression.
  6. To offer students from other majors performance opportunities and academic courses that develop musical understanding and an appreciation for the art of music.
  7. To serve as resource for the community and a center for music performance, scholarship, pedagogy, therapy, and music education and to enrich the profession by providing opportunity for both trained and amateur musicians to experience and study the art of music.
