Fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of
Music, the New York State Department of Education, and the American Music
Therapy Association, the Nazareth College Department of Music offers a full
curriculum of academic and performance based instruction in the art of music
that prepares students for careers as educators, music therapists, performers,
composers, and scholars. Additionally the Department seeks to foster informed
audiences and prepare graduates for leadership roles in the musical community.
Based upon the principle of comprehensive music education, the programs of
study in the department offer a full range of courses in music theory, music
history, applied instruction, ensemble participation, as well as courses
designed to meet the professional needs of music educators and music
therapists. The Department offers all
students the opportunity to become competent and capable musicians imbued with
a love of music as an art form and capable of musical performance that is
technically proficient and artistically expressive.
In addition to matriculation to graduate study, graduates of
the Nazareth College Department of Music have successfully gained employment as
music teachers in both public and private school and pre-school through collegiate
educational setting. Graduates of the
program in music therapy work as clinicians in hospitals, nursing homes,
special needs facilities and in private therapy practices. In addition to these areas of professional employment,
graduates of the program are active performers in a variety of community and
professional music activities, serve as leaders of liturgical music, and
function as articulate advocates for the art of music.
The Nazareth College Department of Music offers Bachelor of
Music degrees in:
Music Education (with B-12
Teacher Certification)
Music Therapy (Approved by the American Music Therapy
Association, this leads to the Registered Music Therapist, and eligibility to
sit for the national certification examination in music therapy administered by
the Certification Board for Music Therapists.)

The Department also offers a Bachelor of Arts in Music, a
broad-based liberal arts degree that provides students an opportunity to
combine their interest in the art of music with complimentary disciplines that
allow them to pursue employment in a variety of nontraditional and emerging
vocational fields.
For the non-music major, a Minor in Music is comprised of
eighteen credit hours selected from music history, music theory, and applied
music courses. Additionally, non-majors
are encouraged to participate in the various ensemble activities offered by the
department. (Audition requirements vary
depending upon the ensemble.)
All
