Creative Arts Therapy - Specializations in Art Therapy and Music Therapy

A Creative Arts Therapy Program embedded in a psychotherapeutic orientation prepares students educated in art or music to be effective and ethical professionals specializing in the fields of Art Therapy or Music Therapy. It is committed to developing people who are capable of applying intellectual strength, ethics, and aesthetic values in the treatment of individuals, groups, and families.

Accreditation and Credential Information

The Art Therapy specialization is accredited by the American Art Therapy Association (AATA).Students enrolled in the program will earn a minimum of 1200 hours in direct client contact and all the necessary educational training required to begin the process towards registration (ATR - art therapist registered). Registration is awarded by the ATCB (Art Therapy Credentialing Board) after a student completes 1000 paid hours of direct client contact post graduation.

The Music Therapy specialization is accredited by the National Association of Music Schools Completion of the curriculum and clinical training requirements permit students to sit for the national certification examination in music therapy administered by the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT). Successful completion of the examination leads to the awarding of the MT-BC (music therapist-board certified credential) which requires continuing education for its maintenance.

Entry Requirements for Art Therapy Specialization

Completion of a baccalaureate degree at an accredited institution with a cumulative index of 3.0 and a 3.0 average in the major field. An applicant who does not meet these grade point average expectations must address them in his/her personal statement; please see the Personal Statement section of the admissions application form for further information. Prior coursework must include 18 credits in studio art coursework and 15 credit hours in psychology. Nine out of 15 credit hours in psychology must be in the following courses: Introduction to Psychology or General Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, and a Developmental Psychology or Adolescent Psychology course.
Presentation of official transcripts.
Three letters of recommendation.
Completion of the personal-professional statement as described on the application form. Submission of 20 slides indicating competency in two- and three- dimensional work. (CD-ROM or DVD format ONLY, please).

Entry Requirements for Music Therapy Specialization

Completion of a baccalaureate degree at an accredited institution with a with a formalized music major, a cumulative index of 3.0, and a 3.0 average in the major field. An applicant who does not meet these grade point average expectations must address them in his/her personal statement; please see the Personal Statement section of the admissions application form for further information. Prior coursework must include 12 credit hours in psychology. Nine out of twelve credit hours in psychology must be in the following courses: Introduction to Psychology or General Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, and a Developmental Psychology or Adolescent Psychology course.
Presentation of official transcripts.
Three letters of recommendation.
Completion of the personal-professional statement as described on the application form.
A live audition on the student’s primary instrument.
Demonstration of basic proficiency on the piano and guitar.
