Music Education

The Nazareth College Music Department is moving to meet the changes that are being encountered in the areas of technology, subject information, and learning. Music Education students must be involved in knowing and maintaining a fixed body of knowledge that has been passed on to preserve while continuing to incorporate new ideas and knowledge into the discipline. The curriculum of the Music Education Program is designed to offer students advanced instruction in curriculum, pedagogy, musicianship, research methods, and various topics in both music and music education. Additionally, the program addresses the needs of the music educator by providing an opportunity for personal growth in students’ own musicianship through courses in music history, music theory, and applied study.

Entry Requirements

Completion of a baccalaureate degree at an accredited institution with a cumulative index of 3.0 and a B average in the major field. An applicant who does not meet these grade point average expectations must address them in his/her personal statement; please see the Personal Statement section of the admissions application form for further information.
Presentation of official transcripts.
Two letters of recommendation.
Copy of teacher certification in Music Education.
Application and fee.
Completion of the personal-professional statement as described on the application form.
An audition on the candidate’s major instrument. (*Please see further information below.)

Auditions will begin at 6 PM. The auditions should be 10 to 15 minutes in length representing at least two different composers and styles. A variety of tempos is suggested. Vocalists should include music in three languages, including English. As part of the audition the Music Department Faculty will briefly interview each candidate.

Accompanying the admissions application materials is an audition request form that must be completed and returned at least two weeks before the audition date. The audition must be completed prior to the application deadline.

Certification required for admission: Initial or Provisional certification in Music Education
