SOC 311 - Sociology of Work

Who decided that we have to work 40 hours a week? Do jobs reflect our true selves or are they just a way to earn money? How does today’s job market differ from those experienced by previous generations? This elective takes seriously the idea that work – what we do all day – is influential to our experience of the world. The course will focus on the experience and cultural meaning of work in the United States and abroad, 21st century trends in labor and employment, and the relationship between work and inequality. Whether you know what you want to do after Naz or not, this course will expose you to a wide range of perspectives on why and how we work. Course Codes: BR.
