HIS 213 - Epidemics and Pandemics in US Society, 1492- Present


This course explores the ways that epidemics and pandemics have reshaped U.S. Society from the Columbian exchange to COVID-19.  Some of the infectious diseases addressed in this study include Smallpox, Cholera, Influenza, HIV/AIDS, and COVID-19. The course will include a focus on how epidemics and pandemics reshape everyday life, expose social fault lines by exacting a toll on the most vulnerable populations, how medical science and public health have been shaped by and responded to these diseases, and why Americans were unprepared for the latest pandemic.
