AHI.Q 273 - Introduction to 20th Century Art

(Visual and Performing Arts-PEQ) Why do artists make art, and How does art reflect the culture in which the artist works? This course covers art made by Americans, Russians, Pre-and Post-WWI and WWII Germans, other western Europeans as well as Africans. During this era women & non-academics become artists, while many artists travel to what they called “primitive” cultures (such as Africa, South America, Island Nations, etc.) for new artistic inspiration. We also see artists taking on non-academic subjects, such as the working classes, urban poor, & prostitutes as new subject matter and the rise of Abstract art and found objects. The personal and cultural reasons behind these choices are covered in-depth in this course. Course Codes: ABR. This PEQ course counts as a Global course.
