RES 352G - Love and Beauty in Mystical Islam


This course will investigate the nature of love and beauty in Sufism as a mystical tradition of Islam. Sufi way of love and beauty is deeply rooted in Sufi orders and rituals. Students will read some literary selections on love and beauty from well known Sufi mystics, such as, Al Ghazzali, Rumi, Ibn Arabi and Hafiz. The course will also cover topics such as the influence of Sufism on both the East and the West; Sufism and the role of women; Sufi compatibility with orthodox Islam, Sufi sprituality and its relation to Jewish, Christian, Hindu and Buddhist mysticism.
