PTR 621 - Professional Issues III: Health Care System


The third in a series of five courses related to profesional issues, this course introduces students to health behaviors, health belief models, healthcare policy making, regulatory issues, and reimbursement in healthcare, preparing them to function in the US healthcare system. The uniqueness of the US healthcare system and international differences among health care systems, medical information issues, roles of medical and health professionals and issues of health care access are stressed. The course provides an overview of the central themes of the health care system in the US: access, cost, and quality; their relationship to health status; and international comparisons. The course provides an understanding of the US health care system from the multiple perspectives of the physical therapy health care provider, the patient, the employer, and the government/taxpayer.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of all prior required PT courses.
