HIS 318 - PII Medieval Europe I


(Perspectives II course) An intensive study of the Mediterranean world and Europe, beginning with the crisis of the third century and ending with the emergence of the successor kingdoms and cultures of early Medieval Europe (c. 800). Topics include: the cultural transformations of Late Antiquity; debates over the causes of the decline and fall of the Roman Empire; the rise and triumph of Christianity and the conversion of the Empire; the migrations and invasions of barbarian tribes and their permanent settlement in Roman territory; the emergence of the New Rome of the east, the Byzantine Empire; the rise and spread of Islam and the cultural and political reconfiguration of the Mediterranean world.
