ADOL 410 - Principles of Teaching Learning and Assessment for Diverse Secondary Learners

This course is an investigation of what counts as “effective teaching” for adolescents in grades 7-12. Progressing from theory to practice, the content of the course is divided into three modules:  Developing a Conceptual Framework (Module I); Unit and Lesson Planning (Module II); and From Page to Practice (Module III). The topics in each module enable teacher-candidates to develop a theoretical and research-based framework for their practice as they consider the diverse needs of their students. The course title uses the term “diverse learners” because the course asks students to consider the ways in which social constructs such as race, class, gender, (dis)ability, sexuality, culture, etc. impact and are impacted by classroom practices and definitions of learning. With regard to the question of social justice, the course considers how various theories inform pedagogy, how various pedagogies produce different types of student-citizens, and how such student-citizens themselves may understand and act to realize social justice in a global society. The course, in other words, provides teacher-candidates with multiple and varied opportunities to analyze the power dynamics informing how learning takes place and collaborate with their peers, faculty and local teachers about what it means to teach adolescents in authentic and meaningful ways.
