ENGL 133 - PI Shapes of the Imagination: Science Fiction

(Perspectives I course) Students will be invited to explore the literary methods at work in a variety of science fiction texts (cinematic texts, radio programs, and television shows as well as written texts) by such authors as Isaac Asimov, Pat Cadigan, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and H.G. Wells. We will look at such things as characterization, setting, narrative patterns, etc. to explore the specific ways in which these methods are employed in science fiction. Students will be given the chance to write science fiction if they so desire.
