History and Mission

Nazareth College is a private, co-educational comprehensive college with a liberal arts and sciences core. Founded in 1924 by the Sisters of St. Joseph, Nazareth has been independent for more than 30 years. Historically rooted in the Catholic tradition of its founders, the College welcomes men and women of all faiths. Its mission is to educate its students in the liberal arts and sciences and in professional fields so as to foster commitment to a life informed by intellectual, ethical and aesthetic values; to develop skills necessary for the pursuit of a meaningful vocation; and to inspire dedication to the ideal of service in their communities.

To carry out that mission Nazareth College provides an undergraduate curriculum which challenges students to high academic achievement; advances in students the intellectual development necessary for critical thinking, aesthetic understanding, effective communication, and lifelong learning; offers graduate programs which prepare students to be effective and ethical professionals in their chosen fields; appoints faculty whose primary commitment to teaching is complemented by recognition of the value of scholarship, professional development, and concern for the student as a whole person; strives for an institution-wide culture which welcomes diversity and welcomes and respects the intellectual freedom of each individual; encourages a commitment to informed values by providing opportunities for ethical and spiritual exploration; fosters an aesthetic sense through programs in the arts; develops in its students an appreciation of the natural environment by continued attention to campus beauty; encourages students to learn and sustain habits of healthful living; prepares students to become active and informed participants in the society in which they live and work; sustains a dynamic collaboration between college and community for the extension and the enrichment of both campus life and the life of the surrounding community.

Curriculum

Nazareth College offers more than 40 majors and minors, all grounded in the liberal arts and sciences. Through the liberal arts core, all students take classes in the College of Arts and Sciences. The School of Education, School of Health and Human Services, and School of Management offer professional-oriented programs. To obtain a baccalaureate degree, students must earn at least 120 credits and fulfill the general curriculum and major requirements. General curriculum requirements include the Freshman Seminar, English, foreign language (for B.A. degree programs), physical education (two semesters), a global studies course and writing-intensive courses. In addition, students take a variety of interdisciplinary courses called Perspectives that cover the fine arts, history, literature, mathematics, philosophy, religious studies, natural science and social sciences.

About 80 percent of students earn credit for off-campus learning through student teaching, fieldwork, community service and internships. This hands-on approach allows Nazareth students to learn broadly and deeply - to gain meaningful and practical experience that will prepare them for the future.

Recognition

U.S. News and World Report’s college survey for the year 2005 ranks Nazareth in the top tier of colleges and universities in the category of Universities-Masters, North Region (covering 11 states and the District of Columbia). Nazareth is one of only 15 schools on U.S. News and World Report’s “Great Schools at Great Prices” list.

Peterson’s Competitive Colleges 2004-2005 includes Nazareth College among its profiles of the nation’s leading colleges and universities and the Princeton Review features Nazareth College in its 2004-2005 guide to “The Best Northeastern Colleges.”

Commitment to the Future

The year 2004 marked the completion of Nazareth’s largest capital campaign in history. The College raised more than $25 million to support the purchase of 73 acres of adjoining land and buildings, doubling its size. Today, students, faculty and staff enjoy a 150 acre campus that includes; the five-story Golisano Academic Center; a new 2,200 seat athletic stadium; the spacious apartment style Elizabeth George and Portka residence halls; and upscale coffeehouses like Colie’s Café and Café Sorelle - all connected via an intercampus roadway system.

Despite accelerated growth, Nazareth’s commitment to strong student-faculty connections, small class sizes and a reputation for academic quality and value remains the same.

Respect and Diversity
