    This course offers an overview of select methods and materials of research in music and addresses some of the challenges involved in writing about music. We will explore several different kinds of writing, including music analysis and criticism, and students will practice writing response papers, abstracts, article critiques, and various practical forms. The course will also include an introduction to available style manuals and provide guidelines for proper documentation of print and electronic sources in footnotes and bibliographies.   • MUS 470 - Musical Borrowing


     

    The course explores select methods and techniques of borrowing existing music by composers from the Middle Ages to postmodernism. The main focus will be on the changing functions of borrowing in various historical eras and corresponding musical practices ranging from the cantus firmus to quotation to recomposition to sampling. The course will also address the larger problem of intertextuality.

    Will explore and apply the technical, musical, cultural, and historical tools available to discover meaning in music inspired by magical and/or esoteric trends in the West. This incorporates methodologies located within the discipline of Esoteric Studies.   • MUX 126 - Music/Business Sight-Singing Proficiency Exam


    All music students at Nazareth College (regardless of major) undergo a rigorous in-depth instruction in aural skills (sight singing and dictation) grounded in the Western European tonal tradition. The Music/Business Sight Singing Proficiency Exam is designed to demonstrate that music/business students have mastered the ability to sight-sing and take aural diction at a basic level (following two semesters of aural skills). The exam will be administered towards the end of the student’s sophomore year after they have successfully completed Sight Singing/Ear Training I (MUS 125) and Sight Singing/Ear Training II (MUS 126).

  • MUX 132 - Music/Business Piano Proficiency Exam


    The piano is the musician’s instrument, and as such, all music students at Nazareth College (regardless of major) undergo a rigorous in-depth instruction in basic piano skills. The Music/Business Piano Proficiency Exam is designed to demonstrate that music/business students have mastered the ability to play piano at a basic level (following two semesters of class piano instruction). At the conclusion of both Class Piano I (MUG 131) and Class Piano II (MUG 132) all students perform a jury examination to demonstrate what they have learned for the semester. The jury forms for Class Piano II (MUG 132) will serve as the Piano Proficiency exam for Music/Business students. The students will be expected to play at a certain level on their jury perfomance following the completion of Class Piano II in order to pass their piano proficiency exam.

  • MUX 492 - MUSBUS Senior Capstone


    The Music/Business Senior Capstone Project is a professional portfolio the music business students begin developing during their first sememster at Nazareth and continue to revise and maintain throughout their course of study. This portfolio will include examples of compositions that the students have composed, arranged, transcribed and recorded. It will also include promotional and marketing materials from at least two concerts or gigs arranged and performed either by the candidate or another perfoming artist; a DVD recording of at least two concert performances(one can be from the candidates Senior Recital Concert); a creative original promotional or marketing concept related to the music business field developed by the candidate; a repertoire list of pieces the candidate has learned in their applied lessons; and any other document or project that student deems appropriate.

  • MED 301 - Secondary Music Education Methods


    Teaching music at the middle school and high school levels. Topics include the following: administrative and professional roles of the music educator; curriculum surveys; assessment; public relations and communication processes between school, home and community; using technology for research, organizational skills and teaching; and methods for teaching literacy skills for the adolescent. A 25-hour field placement in a secondary school music program is required and provides opportunity for guided observation, teaching and feedback. Students also study guitar one day per week.

    Teaching general music at the primary and intermediate levels based on the national and state standards for music education. Topics include: the study of methodologies (such as Kodaly, Orff, and Dalcroze); a review of materials and resources available to elementary music educators; lesson planning and teaching demonstrations; appropriate teaching practices for special learners; the use of music from various cultures in the classroom; proficient accompanying skills on the autoharp and piano; effective use of the recorder in elementary general music; and assessment techniques for music educators.
